It IS shiny, however does not look ""cheap"" in my opinion. It's ginormous and fits all my stuff (and somewhere along the road I became my mother - - i.e., continuously packing as if i'd be deserted on an island somewhere). I've had different massive purses/laptop totes and though they've held up, they seem to strain beneath the load. Siamod 35265 Serra bag is pretty stiff, and does not seem to be overloaded (no bulges, no stretched straps). i am getting to purchase a second in brown. : )
